The sharpest divide is in upper-middle-income countries – where 15-24 year-olds are more than seven times more likely to rely on social media platforms for information than people aged 65+.
In countries where there's widespread digital access but a weak web presence for traditional news sources, social media fills the void for young people.

The situation is very different in low-income countries, where many lack internet access. About 21% of young people in these countries say they don’t have a go-to information source at all.
